: : at "the speed of thought" Tomorrow, when you wake up, your biggest competition won't be from across town, or from somebody in the next state. It may be from the other side of the planet... from a place you never even heard of before. This is not a problem. It is opportunity. |
"The Web" is is not really about technology. It just uses technology. What it's really about, is people; inventing, connecting, finding new ways to work, be productive, & communicate. The driving force of change has always been human interaction sharing, trading & building on the basis of ideas. Trade & commerce (and, warfare, too) has, historically, been one of the primary vehicles carrying new ideas from culture to culture, society to society. Commerce has always seemed, to me, to be a better way of making progress. A big part of commerce is really about ideas, and ideas are currency as much as dollars or deutschmarks. Trade & commerce, I believe, is the best way we can achieve real peace and prosperity throughout the world. When the al-Queda terrorists attacked The World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, I think they were attacking world trade & commerce as much because it's a way ideas are spread. Ideas they fear. Ideas that challenge their notions of cultural and societal supremacy. Ideas are bridges that span cultures, history, and societies. Nothing is as powerful as an idea who's time has come. "The Web is one of those world changing ideas. It is a bridge, spanning continents and oceans; easily challenging the barriers of geography, language, and politics that have contained humanity for centuries. It is doing this in ways that were little more than the stuff of science-fiction & fantasy just a few short years ago." Today, it matters less & less where you are on the face of the Earth. Anybody with an idea can "go global", overnight with the click of a mouse. But, it can also be a double edged sword. Not all ideas are good ideas. As powerful as the Web is, some things threaten to choke it into oblivion. Sending unsolicited bulk commercial email is one of those kinds of ideas and, for this reason, we support federal and international laws that would provide significant civil and criminal penalties for this kind of misuse of the global network. Today, your "home office" can be anywhere. It can be in a little town out in the cornfields & barnyards of Iowa, or it can be in the heart of one of the great global centers of commerce & industry. The Web gives us a medium to reach out like never before. We are limited only by our own vision, creativity, and our eagerness to explore. There are no limits. |
